Serious stuff, please read on…

Last year over 200,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer. This past December our mom became one of those women. With no family history of breast cancer we were all shocked with this news. Breast cancer is something that you think will never happen to you or someone that you love and care about. But as we all see it does and it will continue to happen.

The impact that having breast cancer can have on that person and the people around you is incredible. When our mom was diagnosed with breast cancer God really opened up our eyes to see what matters most in life. You don’t realize how much you rely on someone until you have had to face the fact that you could lose them. Seeing our mom go through a lumpectomy, double mastectomy and then through her chemo treatments was not easy. She still has a long haul ahead of her with treatments every week for the next year. But God has truly blessed us with an incredible Mother and role model that I will, by the grace of God continue to have for many more years to come!

This November I along with my sister will be walking in the 60 mile Breast Cancer 3 day walk. This is not just a walk for breast cancer, but rather a walk to help fight and find a cure for breast cancer. And to help support those who have battled cancer and lost the fight and for those like my Mom who will continue to fight it. My sister and I must raise $2,200 each before we are able to participate in this walk. All donations go to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.

Any donation that you are able to contribute would be a step towards the goal. You can donate directly on our website at www.the3day.org/sandiego06/mamasgirls or directly on our personal web pages at www.the3day.org/sandiego06/hschaffner www.the3day.org/sandiego06/cwiley or you can also send a donation along with the enclosed donation form to the address listed.

If you are unable to donate but know someone that has breast cancer and is battling it, someone who has overcome it or lost the fight to breast cancer, and would like to add their name to the list of people that we will be walking for, please go ahead and send that to us. We would love to know that we are walking to make a difference for many people’s lives.

Please help us in raising support to find a cure for a cancer that is killing 1 woman every 13 minutes!

Ready with our walking shoes on,
Heather Schaffner & Courtney Wiley

    Common Breast Cancer Myths

The first myth pertaining to this disease is that it only affects women.

Second myth that is associated with this disease is that if one has found a lump during an examination, it is cancer.

Third is that it is solely hereditary

The next myth associated with breast cancer is downright ridiculous. Would you believe, that in this day and age, some individuals still think that breast cancer is contagious?

Conversely, some individuals foolishly believe that breast size determines whether or not one gets cancer.

Finally, another myth that is associated with this disease is that it only affects older people. This is not so. Although the chance of getting breast cancer increases with age, women as young as 18 have been diagnosed with the disease.
